The Seed of Love

Chocolate!!! It’s good stuff. No, actually it’s great stuff. Both, for our taste buds and for our health. The sweet taste of goodness melting in your mouth is irresistible to most. However, the true hero of this tasty food is not the actual chocolate, but a bean that the chocolate is made of … the cocoa bean.

Cocoa is the dried and fermented seed of the cacao tree. Its latin name is theobroma cacao, which means “cacao, the food of the gods.”

The reason why cocoa and love are so closely connected is not by chance. There is a phytochemical in cocoa called phenylethylamine (PEA) that is the same substance your brain makes when you are in love. PEA also helps you be alert and focused … so either fall in love or eat chocolate to enjoy these benefits.

Did you know that over 80% of the population is deficient in magnesium? Well, a great way to bring these levels up is to eat cocoa. 100g of cocoa has 500mg of magnesium!

Unfortunately, not all chocolate is created equal. Most chocolate bars that you would find in a convenience market contain hydrogenated and trans-fats, dairy, and loads of sugar. Even the ones that say “made with dark chocolate”, I would stay away from. Look for organic, free-trade, chocolate with at least 70% cocoa mass … then you’re getting the good stuff.

EASY Homemade

Hot Chocolate

  • 1 tbsp raw cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp honey or agave
  • 1 cup of hot water

Stir all ingredients and enjoy! Adjust ingredients to your taste.
