The Doctrine of Signatures

The Doctrine of Signatures has to be one of the coolest things I’ve come across in nutrition and herbal medicine. Have you ever heard of the term “you are what you eat?”  Well, this concept takes that saying to a whole new level. The Doctrine of Signatures is a philosophy dating back to the time of Galen, a roman physician and philosopher, that states that every plant was created with a “sign”, indicating its purpose.

WalnutWalnuts look like the brain. We now know that the healthy omega-3 fats in walnuts are great for brain development.

Tomato SliceTomatoes have 4 chambers just like a heart. Tomatoes are rich in Lycopene, a phytonutrient that has been used for treating cardiovascular disease.

Sweet PotatoesSweet potatoes look like a pancreas (the organ that releases insulin to control blood sugar), and indeed help diabetics with blood sugar control.

AvocadoAvocados target the health of the womb and cervix and look like these organs. And, it takes exactly 9 months for an avocado to grow from blossom to fruit! Coincidence?! When a women eats 1 avocado a week, it helps balance hormones, shed excess birthweight, and prevents cervical cancer.

Grocery shopping will be a whole new experience …
