I have been making drinks using food, herbs, superfoods, spices, and supplements for many years. Over the years I have refined my favourite drink down to a number of ingredients through a process of trial and error; observing both the way I felt and the way the beverage tasted. I finally came up with a formula that tastes great and gives me abundant energy.
I began teaching Elixir formulation in workshops and people kept on requesting a ready-made blend of the ingredients I was teaching them about. As a result I came up with the Elixir.
We are all familiar with the taste of chocolate. Chocolate owes its irresistible flavour to the seed/nut of the cacao tree. Raw cacao boasts a wide array of beneficial phytochemicals, two of which being phenylethylamine (PEA) and anandamide. PEA is released in your body when you are in love. Anandamide is sometimes referred to as the “bliss” chemical. In addition to the two mood enhancing chemicals, cacao has the highest ORAC value (a measure of antioxidant capacity) of any food on the planet. 1
Goji berries have been one of the principle herbs in Chinese medicine for thousands of years due to its healing and tonifying effects. It contains all eight essential amino acids. Goji berries also have high levels of lutein and zeaxanthin, which directly support the health the eye.
Lucuma is a Peruvian fruit that in ancient times was used to treat skin and stomach problems. It adds a wonderful maple flavour to Elixir. Lucuma contains high levels of vitamin B3, important for digestive and mental health.
Another fruit to give Elixir a great flavour, mesquite is high in fibre and has a very low glycemic index of 25. It has traditionally been used to treat sore throats and broken bones.
Maca has been cultivated in South America for at least 2600 years. It is particularly renowned for its adaptogenic effects, especially on the hormonal system and postmenopausal symptoms. 2 Maca contains isothiocyanates, which have been shown to balance hormones and have aphrodisiac qualities. 3, 4</span.
Athletes really benefit from taking eleuthero, as it improves oxygen delivery to muscles and enhances circulation. 5 It has also been shown to balance adrenal hormones through its adaptogenic ability and provide a variety of protective effects for cognition. 6, 7, 8
Cordyceps is an adaptogenic mushroom, which has a time-tested ability to improve sleep, reduce stress, and support the immune system. 9 Athletes find this herb particularly useful as it greatly improves lactate and ventilatory threshold. 10
